School Picture Day Prep: A Simple Guide for Parents
School picture day has a funny way of sneaking up on us.
One minute it’s just another day on the school calendar, and the next you’re standing in the bathroom trying to fix a cowlick, find a missing shoe, and convince your child that yes, they really do need to brush their hair.
The good news? Picture day doesn’t have to be stressful.
Here are a few simple things you can do the night before and morning of picture day to help your child feel comfortable and ready for the camera.
1. Keep Hair Simple
Picture day probably isn't the best morning to try a brand-new hairstyle.
Stick with something your child normally wears and feels comfortable in. If they have longer hair, make sure it's brushed and styled the way you'd like it photographed.
And don't stress over every little strand. A little personality is okay!
Tip: Pack a small brush or comb if your child is old enough to keep one in their backpack.
2. Choose an Outfit They Feel Good In
Comfort matters more than having the fanciest outfit.
Choose something that fits well, feels comfortable, and looks like them. Solid colors, simple patterns, and classic pieces tend to photograph beautifully.
If you're deciding between two outfits, let your child have a say. They're much more likely to feel confident in something they actually like wearing.
3. Check the Little Details
Before heading out the door, take a quick look at:
Hair and bangs
Clean face
Teeth
Collars and buttons
Wrinkles or lint
Glasses
Jewelry or accessories
That's it! You don't need a 20-step checklist.
4. Don't Forget Glasses
If your child wears glasses, please have them wear their glasses for picture day.
Their school portrait should look like them, and for many kids, their glasses are part of their everyday appearance.
If they have transition lenses or particularly reflective lenses, you can mention it to the photographer. We can usually make small adjustments to help minimize distracting reflections.
5. Give Them a Pep Talk, But Don't Overdo It
This one is easy to overlook.
Instead of saying, "You better smile for your picture today!" try something simple like:
"Just have fun and be yourself. Your photographer will tell you what to do."
Kids don't need to know how to pose. That's our job!
Sometimes the best portraits happen when children aren't worrying about whether they're smiling "right."
6. Get a Good Night's Sleep
This might be the most helpful tip of all.
A rested kid is generally a happier kid and a happier kid is much more likely to enjoy picture day.
So rather than spending an hour perfecting their outfit the night before, prioritize a normal bedtime and a calm morning.
7. Remember: They Don't Have to Be Perfect
Your child doesn't need perfectly styled hair, a flawless smile, or a Pinterest-worthy outfit.
They're going to change so much from year to year.
The missing tooth, the little gap in their smile, the favorite glasses, the slightly-too-big shirt they insisted on wearing, those are the things you'll look back on someday and love.
The goal of a great school portrait isn't perfection.
It's capturing who your child is right now.
